Last night's dream

I don't usually write very much in my Live Journal, but today I felt like it, and I was able to get time on the computer to do so. I have also noticed that the world has not ended due to a lack of my deathless prose, so this probably has worried no one.

I am writing today because of what was to me a rather odd dream, and I am posting it in the vain hope that someone other than my wife, Elaine, will notice it and comment on it.

First, however, I need to give those who read this and know little about me a key piece of background information which makes a dream odd for me that may not be so odd for someone else. I am afraid of drowning. This has caused me not to learn to swim a stroke until I was 18 years old, in contrast to my cousin Ed, who as a five year old, was capable of swimming past the marker buoys in the water off New York City to the point where his recently deceased father had to retrieve him from trying to get too close to ocean-going vessels. As it is, I am anything but a strong swimmer and I am pleased to do a very few laps in a pool when I have the rare occasion to access one. My maximum depth under water has been touching the bottom of a pool eight feet deep. I have never used any diving equipment, and I apologize to the knowledgeable about such things if I struggle to use the right words for the various items, and especially, if I get anything technically incorrect. The same goes for anything that offends the nautically experienced.

In my dream last night, I was sitting in a small rowboat on a beautiful sunlit sea, probably in Caribbean waters. (Hey, I've seen pretty pictures in National Geographic! Otherwise, my furthest point south on the east coast of the U.S. has been Washington, D.C. when I was in elementary school on summer vacation.) The boat lacked a motor, and had only its two oars for propulsion. It was stilled by a tiny anchor off a classic white sand tropical island. I was wearing dark blue swim trunks, a diver's weight belt, diving mask and diver's tank. I was sitting with my back to the aft starboard, tank hanging over the water just off the gunwale. Sitting across from me was the only other occupant of the boat, a gorgeous twenty something brunette in a bikini, with masses of dark hair. Her face was concealed by a diver's mask and her breath piece from her diving tank. Oddly, while she also had a weight belt around her slender waist, neither of us were wearing swim fins. As I thought to ask her who she was, she tilted backward off the boat before the first word could clear my lips. I felt that she had intentionally moved in to the water, but I was uncertain whether she did it to evade conversation, or simply didn't expect me to start talking right then.

On seeing this, I set myself ready to go below, and duplicating her motion, sent myself over the side backwards. (Now I know from reading that divers should always have someone remain in the boat when they dive as a safety precaution, but this was ignored in my dream.) At first, I could see as I drifted downwards on my back the sunlight filtering through the surface of the water and I thought it was very like one of those scenes from a Jacques Cousteau televison special. I then reoriented myself in the water and faced downward, bringing both the sea floor and the young woman in to my view. I estimate that in this area the ocean floor was no deeper than about one hundred feet. There was a cave mouth on the bottom and she was swimming in to it. I followed her.

It was dark inside the cave and I immediately lost sight of her and my surroundings. The cave was water filled, and I began to swim its length. I felt my way along first down deeper below the surface of the sea, then felt a bend where I sensed that I was now parallel to the bottom and most likely about ten feet below it. After an estimated few yards of this, I felt another bend in the tunnel I was in, and sensed that I was now travelling to a greater elevation within the sea cave, almost directly toward the surface, not of the ocean's floor but the surface of the water.

I did not emerge on to a beach, but was rather still inside the cave. There was an air pocket here and a dry area about five feet high. Moreover, I could see because both sunlight and fresh air came through a tiny hole in the roof less than the size of my hand. The woman sat there dripping before me, and she had not yet removed any of her gear so that she could not yet reply should I then attempt to converse with her. I removed my mask and tank and breathed with relief and gratitude the air from outside the cave that whistled through the tiny hole. It is at this unfortunate turn that I woke up, so I wonder if I will ever know what the dream was about or what was to happen next in it.

You could be so kind as to give them your castoffs, but not the first fruits that I gave you. That man gave up his bed the night before so that a pregnant woman could have a warm place to sleep and a hot meal to eat. He did it because he loves me.

But he’s homeless! He’s worthless.

To Me, he’s worth more than a star. But, while we’ll assigning value, let’s talk about Friday night, when you went to the coffee shop with your bible study group. You were not thinking pure thoughts about your waitress while you ate. And after you sat there for three hours, taking up room that she could have been using to make money, you left her a dollar.

That’s 20 percent, Lord. I did what I was supposed to.

The college student in the group saw what you did and emptied her wallet to make up for it. She showed kindness to the waitress. The same waitress who works two jobs trying to earn enough money to support her children.

Single mother, huh? She deserves to have it rough to make up for her sins.

Wife of an enlisted marine, actually. She hasn’t heard from her husband in two weeks, not since his unit went into battle. Same woman who bought the homeless man supper on Wednesday.

And did you hear that Rebecca won two thousand dollars in the lottery- I can’t believe You didn’t punish her for playing it. Gambling, no good ever came of that.

Rebecca, after she gave the waitress the tip, found that lottery ticket on the ground. I guided her eyes to it.

I can’t believe You actually care that much for someone who goes out partying.

I never said Rebecca was perfect… she’s My child.
